MG Austria 2012
2nd - 14th September

MGs are again returning to Austria in 2012 to drive the spectacular roads and take in the beautiful Austrian scenery on this exciting MG tour. Based in the heart of the Salzburg Alps, surrounded by the region’s stunning mountains, our hotel in Kitzbuhel will provide the ideal base from which to explore. As well as visiting the beautiful cities of Salzburg and Innsbruck we will have the opportunity to drive the famous alpine road up the Grossglockner Mountain, and spend some further time touring the Austrian Lake District.

Itinerary:
2nd September:
Crossing on the Eurotunnel at 08.50hrs, we then drive from Calais across to Belgium. Our 4 star hotel is in the centre of the historic town of Marche-en-Famenne and evening dinner is provided.
Driving Distance = Approximately 186 miles

3rd September:
From Marche-en-Famenne we head south through Germany to the town of Dahn in the Pfälzerwald National Park. Our modern family run 4 star hotel will offer a peaceful retreat. Evening dinner is provided.

4th September:
Heading further south we drive around Stuttgart and head to the German-Austrian Border in the shadow of the Alps. Our traditional hotel at Fussen is furnished with Bavarian antiques and is within walking distance of the town centre. Evening dinner is provided.

5th September:
From Fussen we continue in to Austria and head to the Salzburg Alps. We After crossing through a mountain pass we drop down in to a valley and head to our 4 star resort hotel at Kitzbuhel. Our home for the next 5 nights is located on the edge of the town with beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. The hotel is just a five minute walk from the centre of town and an equal distance to the nearest cable car taking you up to the famous Hahnenkammbahn (Olympic ski run). Evening dinner is provided each evening.

6th September:
An exciting circular road run taking in the Hohe Tauern National Park, to the highest mountain in Austria, the Grossglockner (3,798 metres) and its glacier, the Pasterze. The 30 mile alpine road has 36 bends up an ascent of 2500 metres. The road passes through a unique world of mountains, alpine meadows and mountain forests to the glacier. The return route via the pretty Bad Gastein village takes a car train through the mountain.
Driving distance = Approximately 150 miles

7th September:
A circular road run has been arranged exploring the scenery and medieval towns of the Lower Tirol region. Highlights will include: Rattenberg; one of the smallest and best preserved medieval villages in the area, Brixlegg; home to 3 well preserved castles, and St. Johann, a well established tourist resort with Tirolean dwellings with frescoed facades.

Kitzbuhel, Austria

8th September:
A free day to relax and enjoy the scenery. Those who wish to explore the area further can take the scenic Glemmtal Road south of Saalfelden. The road follows the course of the Saalbach River. At Saalbach itself a cable car climbs to the summit of the Schattenberg Mountain (2018 metres) with beautiful views to the North.

9th September:
Those who didn’t take a break yesterday may wish to do so, otherwise it is possible to visit the beautiful city of Salzburg, with its many domes and bell towers dominating the skyline. The city is overlooked by the great Hohensalzburg fortress above the River Salzach that runs through the city. The city is famous as being home to the Mozart family and much of the city has a musical theme. For those who prefer open spaces it will be possible to visit the Salzkammergut, known as the Austrian Lake District. 

10th September:
From Kitzbuhel we head West via Innsbruck and the Arlberg pass to the lakeshore town of Bregenz, before crossing the border to Germany and our 4 star hotel on the island of Lindau. You are at leisure in the evening.
Driving Distance = Approximately 178 miles

11th September:
A free day to either explore the Alps to the east of Lindau in the car (about 100 miles), or explore the town of Friedrichshafen by taking the passenger ferry from just outside the hotel. You are at leisure again this evening.

12th September:
From Lindau we follow the shores of Lake Constance, before heading north to Offenburg. After crossing the border in to France we travel to the medieval town of Obernai in the Alsace region. Our 4 star hotel is located just a short walk from the towns historic walls. Evening dinner is provided.

Obernai

13th September:
From Obernai we head West across the hills of the Alsace area and in to the Champagne region. From Toul and Bar-le-Duc we make our way across open countryside to Reims. Our 4 star hotel is in the centre of the city, allowing you to explore on foot before dinner.
Driving Distance = Approximately 220 miles

14th September:
We return home from Reims heading North to Calais and our return Eurotunnel crossing at 15.20hrs.
Driving Distance = Approximately 160 miles
