The "Battle for the Rhine Bridge" was part of "operation Market Garden". British, American and Polish airborne forces were to capture the bridges over rivers and waterways from the Belgian border to Arnhem.
The ground forces comprising of the second British Army, could then reach the German Ruhr in one long thrust. Thus, it was thought, the war would be over by Christmas 1944. The operation however, failed on account of the unexpectedly strong German resistance. The paratroops were unable to hold the bridge with the Allied ground forces not succeeding in reaching Arnhem.
In the evening a tour buffet has been arranged at the hotel from 20.00hrs Approx driving distance: 30 miles
Saturday 17th April There is an opportunity to visit the Meilenverk car collection in Dusseldorf for those wanting to view some spectacular cars in the morning, and then in the afternoon there is river cruise on the Rhine.
